Renfrew Educational Services

About

At Renfrew, we’re proud to provide unique and innovative programs, services, spaces, technology, and equipment. From our purpose-built facilities to the state-of-the-art specialty rooms, we think you’ll be excited by what we can offer your child and family. Since 1974, we’ve welcomed families and children with significant disabilities, including diagnoses such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Global Development Delays. We serve children starting at age 2.8 in ECS up to Junior High and their families, who live in Calgary and the surrounding area.

Currently, we have four locations in Calgary: Janice McTighe Centre, Bowness Centre, Child Development Centre, and Thomas W. Buchanan Centre which accommodate 550 students. Renfrew Educational Services is a Designated Special Education School in Alberta. Our preschool classrooms consist of children with mild/moderate and severe needs. Each classroom team is led by a qualified teacher. Children are supported in the classroom by child development facilitators. Children-to-adult ratios vary according to the needs of the children. Our elementary and Junior High classes ages six to thirteen years are small in size, approximately 12 students. Elementary/Junior High classrooms are multi-age, comprised of students with a range of strengths, skills, and needs. Teachers focus on providing dynamic, authentic activity-based programming utilizing not only the classroom environment but also other spaces inside and outside the school. Students are supported in the classroom by a teacher and child development facilitators. Thousands more children in Calgary and the area also benefit from Renfrew’s services offered to school boards, organizations, First Nations, and families in the community.
